Young Sheldon bosses addresses Big Bang Theory finale crossover

Young Sheldon: Mayim Bialik makes cameo as young Amy

Young Sheldon’s upcoming seventh season has been heavily rumoured to be the show’s last – but this begs the question, will this be a perfect doorway to a Big Bang Theory reunion?

Over the course of Young Sheldon’s run, viewers have come to understand how Sheldon (played by Iain Armitage) comes to be the Sheldon (Jim Parsons) we grew to love in the flagship Big Bang Theory.

The team behind the show have enjoyed embedding the show with easter eggs from the original, from the genesis of his Bazinga catchphrase to his love of comic book t-shirts.

But as Young Sheldon heads more towards a move from Texas to California, where Big Bang is based, it seems now may be the perfect jumping off point.

Ahead of the show’s inevitable conclusion – whether it be season seven or not – the show’s executive producer Steve Holland has given his thoughts about the ultimate crossover.

Speaking to Jessica Radloff for her book, The Big Bang Theory: The Definitive, Inside Story Of The Epic Hit Series, Holland admits he’s hesitant to bring in the original cast in order to send off the spin-off that has managed to define itself on its own.

“You never say never. It would be exciting. I would love to be around them all again, but I don’t want to take anything away from the magnificent cast of Young Sheldon by leaning on the Big Bang cast,” he said (via Looper).

“That show and those actors have earned their mark, and while it would be a very fun nostalgia play, I don’t think it would be fair to them or the show.”

Young Sheldon has previously brought in elements of the characters, though ultimately ties back to what is going on in the main show.

Most notably, Parsons has acted as narrator for his alter-ego’s young self throughout the show’s run.

At points, Mayim Bialik, who played Sheldon’s future wife Amy Farrah-Fowler, has popped in to give her own commentary too.

Simon Helberg, who played Howard Wolowitz in the Big Bang friendship group, has also dipped in for a voiceover cameo.

But by far the closest to a complete connection came in season two’s finale, A Swedish Science Thing and the Equation for Toast.

While Sheldon sat heartbroken after noone turned up to his Nobel Prize party, he reflected on the idea of never having any friends.

The show then tracked through each of his future friend’s bedrooms at that point in time, wherever they were in the world.

While some were also up late listening to the Nobel announcement, others were asleep, or playing computer games, giving a hint to the world that young Sheldon hasn’t seen yet.

Season six of the series is currently airing, with the finale due to air May 18.

The show will return in the fall, putting a release date roughly between September to November.

Young Sheldon airs on CBS in the US and E4 in the UK.
