A six-foot snake has been spotted slithering around a footpath in southern England, police have warned.

The non-venomous python was seen on a footpath in Blackwater, Hampshire, on Friday afternoon.

Hart Rural North, a division of Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary, said a pedestrian took a picture of the snake and reported it to them.

But when a police officer turned up to look for the python it had slithered away and disappeared.

Police have now appealed to anyone with information about the snake to call 101 or report it online.

Hart Rural North said on Facebook: ‘Can you help us find this snake? We were called at 1.49pm on Friday to a sighting of a python near a footpath in Oakfield Road, Blackwater – as pictured by the informant.

‘An officer went to the area to look for the animal but it could not be found. The snake is believed to be a rock or carpet python, five to six feet long and non-venomous.

‘They come from Africa and need to be kept at a temperature of around 32 degrees Celsius.

‘If you see the python in the area, you can call 101 or report online quoting 985 of today’s date.’
