Under trade union law, emergency cover will still be provided and staff can leave the picket lines to attend.

What should you do if you need an ambulance?

The NHS website advises people to call 111 to assess their situation.

Ambulances will still be able to respond in situations of serious illness, but this may only be where there is an immediate risk to life.

Patients should take advice from 111 or 999 call-handlers on whether there are circumstances where it is suitable for them to make their own way to hospital.

Why are ambulance services on strike?

Ambulance services are going on strike in a dispute over pay and staffing shortages.

The unions have suggested that government refusal to release extra funds for healthcare workers could lead to months of disruption.

Are all ambulance staff members on strike?

Ambulance crews working for five services in England represented by Unison will be striking.

However, it is expected that crews will still respond to category 1 emergency calls, seen to be the most life-threatening.

These would include heart attacks or strokes, where the patient needs immediate treatment to prevent death.

It's also thought that some category 2 emergencies, such as a stroke, will also be attended, but most category 2, 3 and 4 emergencies will not be covered.

Call handlers under GMB, Unite and Unison will also be part of the industrial action.
