Animal park worker gored to death by 'world's largest antelope' while leading it back into stables | The Sun

AN ANIMAL park worker has been gored to death by the world's largest antelope while leading it back into the stables.

The vicious attack took place after closing hours at Oland Animal and Entertainment Park in Sweden on Sunday.


The victim's distraught colleague, Richard Berglund, told media he saw the horrifying incident unfold.

He says he was helping the victim take the animals into their stables at the end of the day when his pal was ambushed.

Mr Berglund said: "It was a friend… we're all grieving."

No further details were given at the time, CBS News reports.

Police said the death is being considered a "workplace accident," which is standard procedure.

The owner of the attraction park, on the southwestern island of Oland, confirmed the worker died on Sunday. 

The victim's identity and citizenship has not yet been released.

Further information about what happened inside the enclosure is not yet clear.

There are two species of eland – with the giant variety listed as the largest of the antelope species in the world.

Even the slightly smaller common eland can still grow to heights of almost 6ft and weigh more than 2,000 pounds.

The animals are both native to southern Africa.

On the park's website, visitors are advised it has now closed for the season, according to its website.  

The attack comes after an elephant ripped its handler's body in HALF with its tusks after being forced to haul wood in heatwave.

Supachai Wongtin, 32, died after the 20-year-old male jumbo named Pom Pam became irritated when he was forced to carry heavy logs despite the 32C heat on August 17.

The elephant had been working at a rubber plantation for four days straight when he gored the caretaker in Phang Nga province in Thailand.

Police and animal rescuers arrived at the scene to retrieve the man's body and discovered his limbs had been torn apart.

Pictures show how his body was ripped into several pieces – with his arms and legs detached from the torso.
