Boris waffles about buying a new KETTLE to ease cost-of-living crisis

Bizarre moment Boris waffles about buying a new KETTLE to ease cost-of-living crisis… before admitting it would shave just a TENNER off energy bills expected to rocket to £5,400 in January

  • The outgoing Prime Minister advised Brits in his final policy speech to buy a new kettle to save £10 a year
  • Twitter users branded the advise ‘bizarre’ and joked it was ‘the final answer to solve the cost of living crisis’
  • Ofgem announced the price cap will jump to £3,549 in October, which is expected to rise again in January

Boris Johnson has been slated on social media after advising Brits to ‘buy a new kettle’ which can save them ‘£10 a year’ on their soaring energy bills.

The outgoing Prime Minister said in his final major policy speech today that those suffering under the cost of living crisis should pay £20 for a new kettle to help save in the long-run.

He said: ‘If you have an old kettle that takes ages to boil it may cost £20 to replace it, but if you get a new one you will save £10 a year every year on your electricity bill.’

Twitter users have branded the advise as ‘bizarre’ and jokingly called it ‘the final answer to solve the cost of living crisis’.

Twitter users have reacted angrily to Boris Johnson’s advice on how to handle the cost of living crisis, with some calling it ‘bizarre’

One twitter account said: ‘We have waited ages for Boris Johnson and the Government of which Liz truss is a part of to advise us what we should do about the extraordinary living crisis that we are facing and finally who knew the answer was a new kettle.’

Another said: ‘So if I spend  £20-£30 on a new kettle, I could then save a massive £10 a year on my bills! what a genius! But wait! I haven’t got £20 as I spent it on my last energy bill.’

Others twitter users pointed out that a £10 saving is nothing against the recent price hike, with energy regulator Ofgem announcing on Friday its price cap will jump to £3,549 in October.

The advice was given in Boris Johnson’s last major policy speech in Suffolk today, where he pledged £700 million to Sizewell C power station to help Britain generate its own energy.

Mr Johnson warned it would be ‘absolute madness’ not to push ahead with the nuclear project as Russian President Vladimir Putin wreaks havoc with global oil and gas markets.

The Russian President has been accused of using gas supplies as a ‘weapon’ amid deepening tensions with the West.

It comes as Russian energy giant Gazprom cut off its gas supplies to Germany via the Nord Stream 1 pipeline for maintenance work on Wednesday, further raising tensions on an already taut electricity market.

Britons are forecast to suffer from ever-increasing energy bills over the coming months as the Government comes under pressure to provide more help

Other twitter users reacted with jokes to Boris Johnson advising them to ditch their old kettle’s, with one saying her new kettle will be nicknamed the ‘Boris Jug’

The cost of energy bills is expected to rise even further next year to £5,400, and Chancellor Nadhim Zahawi has said that he is ‘deeply concerned’ at the the prospect of Brits freezing this winter and ‘nothing is off the table’ as ministers consider what extra support to provide.

Tory leadership hopeful Liz Truss has given a strong indication that she will provide support to struggling households should she become next Prime Minister.

She vowed to ‘deliver immediate support to ensure people are not facing unaffordable fuel bills’ this winter.

He said: ‘No one should be cut off if they can’t afford their bills.

‘I’m working with the companies to make sure, and NGOs of course, to make sure those people who really are struggling get that help both financially… but the companies themselves have already started to write letters and emails to ask people if they are vulnerable, if they are feeling that they can’t pay, that they should contact their supplier, their companies.’

Mr Zahawi pledged to ‘deliver’ the £37billion worth of support for households that has already been announced, but also promised to ‘go beyond that’.

‘We need to send a message to Mr Putin that this strategy is not going to work,’ he added.

According to the outgoing Prime Minister, buying a new kettle can help save ‘£10 a year, every year’

Speaking to Sky News on his trip to America, Mr Zahawi revealed his Treasury was ‘looking at all the options’ in providing extra help for hard-pressed Britons this winter.

He said: ‘There’s nothing off the table. We are looking at all the options.

‘Everything from the chief executive of Scottish Power talking about help where we need to maybe create some sort of a fund for companies to be able to continue to help their customers.

‘All the way through to making sure we target the help to both households and small and medium-size businesses and probably some larger businesses.’
