British scuba diver, 29, dies exploring shipwreck off Albanian coast

Female British scuba diver, 29, dies while exploring a shipwreck off Albanian resort town as instructor, 45, is arrested

A British scuba diver has died while exploring a shipwreck off the coast of Albania.

The 29-year-old victim  – a female tourist who has not been named – died during a dive off the coast of Saranda, a resort town in the south of the country near the Greek island of Corfu, on Monday.

Police have arrested the instructor in charge of the trip – named locally as 45-year-old Saimir Kushova – on suspicion of violating health and safety rules and employing someone who was not fully qualified.

Social media profiles show Kushova is an employee at the Spiranca Diving Center and has worked there for two decades.

He is a local, and studied at a marine academy in his home town.

An employee of the diving centre told The Telegraph that the victim was a qualified diver and denied Kushova was to blame for her death.

They said: ‘She was diving on a shipwreck but was only at a depth of seven or eight metres. She came to the surface but then went down.

‘We don’t know what happened, maybe she had a health issue.

‘Saimir has been arrested but he was the one who tried to rescue her, he gave her CPR.’
