A British woman invited as a guest to a wild boar hunt was killed by her companion in France on Sunday, a judicial source said.

The 67-year-old was wounded ‘above the heart’ and taken to hospital in Saint-Brieuc, Brittany, where she died around midday, public prosecutor Nicolas Heitz said.

The companion who shot her, a 69-year-old man, carried out a ‘shot with his rifle which he was carrying at the shoulder,’ directed towards her back, according to a judicial press release.

Police have taken the man into custody and launched a manslaughter investigation.

The exact circumstances are ‘yet to be determined’, Heitz said, describing it as a ‘dramatic accident’.

The party included around a dozen hunters and two guests, the prosecutor said.

The two people involved in the accident were moving through a cornfield together when the shot rang out, according to reporting from Upday.

The shooter was transported to Guingamp hospital after being taken into custody.

He had not consumed alcohol or any toxic substances, according to one of the doctors at the hospital.

After passing away in hospital, responders took the victim to the Rennes Forensic Institute for an autopsy which will take place on Wednesday.

On October 9, a 62-year-old hunter was shot in the abdomen when he came to pick mushrooms in the town of Vinsobres in the South-Drôme.

Other shooting accidents have left families in France beset with tragedy, despite the hunting season drawing to a close.
