Australian Cardinal George Pell has died at the age of 81.
The Age and Sydney Morning Herald confirmed the news from multiple sources on Wednesday morning after reports of the cardinal’s death emerged in Catholic media.
Pell is believed to have died following complications from a hip replacement.
Vatican correspondent Colm Flynn was among the first to report the death online.
“I’ve just spoken to his household and can confirm the sad news of the passing of Cardinal George Pell at the age of 81,” the EWTN News Vatican posted on Twitter. “May he rest in peace”.
