A GRANDMOTHER was heartlessly abandoned by her family on the side of the road in a sickening trend known as "granny dumping".
The elderly woman was found inside a cardboard box with no food or water next to a highway in Mexico.
The cruel act sparked outrage after locals were forced to call emergency services to save the frail old woman.
She was found by shocked residents in Puebla, Mexico, who saw the granny roaming around the local neighbourhood.
Authorities from the DIF Municipal System were called to help the pensioner find food and shelter.
It was while in the custody of the officials that she admitted it was her own family that had abandoned her.

Known as "granny dumping", families around the world leave their elderly relatives stranded every year.
A British man was imprisoned in 2018 after an American dementia patient was flown to the UK and abandoned in a car park.
The case baffled police and sparked a global appeal when Roger Curry, 76, was found outside a bus station in Hereford with no ID and was unable to remember his name.

That case saw 53-year-old Simon Hayes become the first person in the UK jailed for "granny dumping", but the act is not uncommon around the world.
In Japan, the practice is known as "ubasute", and is so common that some charities have even established a “senior citizen postbox".
The service allows poor families to abandon elderly relatives with the charities where they are instead allocated to an old people’s home.
Shockingly, around 100,000 elderly relatives are dumped by family members each year in the US.
The sickening phenomenon is usually down to families being unable or unwilling to care for their aging relatives in their old age.
