Watch as thief steals van and drives away as courier unpacks parcels | The Sun

A COURIER on a delivery run had his van nicked when a thief jumped in the front seat as he looked for parcels.

He watched the bandit speed away leaving the back door open and packages strewn across the street on Thursday morning.

Footage of the 9.30am robbery shows the moment the courier realised he was being carjacked and watched in horror as the thief raced off.

Onlooker Richard Lewis, 34, drove after the van during the Birmingham theft but gave up after it rushed through a red light.

The engineer said: "It was absolutely crazy, I was driving past and saw this bloke suddenly jump in and drive off.

"I was chasing him for about a mile or so he was easily going over 30mph but I couldn't catch him after he went through a red light, it was too dangerous."

Stunned locals in the cul-de-sac in Birmingham say the courier is often seen in the area dropping off parcels.

One neighbour, who asked not to be named, told how the delivery driver was left shaken by the brazen carjacking.

They said: “He looked quite dazed by it all. He couldn’t believe it. He was saying that he was worried about getting in trouble – but it’s not his fault, is it?

“It happened in a split second. The good thing is that he wasn’t hurt because it could have been nasty.

“Everyone just wants the thief caught and the guy to get his van back. He’s a nice chap and good at his job. He doesn’t deserve this."

Mum Kayleigh Woodall, 33, added: "It was completely opportunist. The thief spotted the keys in the ignition and just went for it.

"Everyone feels so sorry for the driver. It must have been terrifying for him.

"Apparently he had come down from Wolverhampton to do his deliveries, so he was a long way from home.

"He's got no chance of getting his parcels back but hopefully he might find his van."

The Sun has contacted West Midlands Police for comment.

The burglary comes after a similar incident back in June when another gobsmacked courier watched in horror as her car was stolen just yards away as she dropped off a package.

Joanne Armstrong stood stunned on a doorstep as the tracksuited thief drove off in her car after sneaking into the driver's seat behind her.

The Evri courier was making her rounds in Atherstone, Warwickshire, when the rapid theft occurred last Wednesday – and it was all caught on video footage.

In the clip, the robber can be seen creeping over the road to Joanne’s Renault Captur as she approaches a house to make a delivery.

The next moment, he speeds off in the red car with her handbag and 19 undelivered parcels still inside, leaving Joanne in shock on the driveway.

Sadly car theft in Britain is on the rise and insurers are more than £1.4billion out of pocket because of it.
