Diners evacuated as fire rips through restaurant in upmarket Belgravia neighbourhood

  • The London Fire Brigade was called to the scene at around 10.40pm last night
  • Seven diners and six restaurant staff escaped before firefighters arrived 

Horrified diners were forced to leave a restaurant in an affluent London neighbourhood last night as a fire ravaged the building.

Around 60 firefighters and eight fire engines rushed to the scene of the blaze at a restaurant on Pont Street in Belgravia yesterday evening.

Seven customers and six restaurant staff escaped before the London Fire Brigade arrived on scene.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used fire escape hoods on one woman and one man who were led to safety from the third floor of the building.

Part of the basement of the building was damaged by fire, while of the extraction system, from the basement to the roof level, was destroyed in the blaze

Fire escape hoods provide the public with up to 15 minutes protection from four of the main fire gases, carbon monoxide, hydrogen cyanide, hydrogen chloride and acrolein.

A London Fire Brigade spokesperson confirmed that they were called to the scene at around 10.40pm and the fire was under control by 2.09am.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. 

Fire crews from Chelsea, Kensington, Soho and Lambeth, Euston, Chelsea and Fulham fire stations were at the scene
