The roof of a double-decker bus was dramatically ripped off after slamming into a bridge.

Photos taken at the scene show the entire roof ripped from the rest of the bus, leaving the chairs on the upper deck completely uncovered, after the incident in Greater Manchester on Monday evening (April 10).

One witness told Manchester Evening News: "It was a low bridge that the bus tried to go under – but the bridge was too low and cut off the roof of the bus.

"It was around 9pm when the bus was approaching the bridge. I thought it was going to stop when they (the driver) realised the height restriction but it just carried on. Luckily there were no passengers on board.

"The bus drove all way under which peeled the top off with ease. Police responded and closed both sides, there are no ambulances present."

Several police vehicles were also spotted and officers attending the scene sealed off Barton Lane in Eccles.

A tweet by Greater Manchester Police (GMP) Traffic read: "Barton Lane, Eccles is currently closed both ways due to a bridge strike by a bus. The road will remain closed until the Ports Authority can attend and assess/repair any damage. Please avoid and plan an alternative route as there may be subsequent local delays."

The force shared their own images of the crash and, along with officers, the Ports Authority was also called in to assess the damage.

It is currently unclear if there were any injuries caused by the incident.

Meanwhile residents took to Twitter to discuss the horrifying accident and share their concerns.

One local wrote: "How freaking fast was it travelling to completely rip the top off? This is 500 yards from where I live and have been shouting for speed restrictions for years, and better signage from this side of the bridge, several years ago it had an illuminated sign, now gone."

"Did the bridge shrink in the rain?" another jibed, while a third added: "That's a bit of a mess. I hope everyone, including the driver, is ok."
