England’s women’s cricket team – who are currently competing at the Commonwealth Games – also showed their support.

In a video posted on England Cricket’s Twitter feed, captain Heather Knight – who lifted the Women’s World Cup at Lord’s in 2017 – had some advice for Lionesses skipper Leah Williamson.

She said: ‘Leah, there is nothing better than captaining your side in a home final. Embrace it, enjoy the moment, keep everyone calm, keep passing out from the back like you do for the Arsenal and you’re going to be great.

‘Best of luck girls. We’re all behind you. Come on England.’

In a message to the women’s team and their manager Sarina Wiegman, Prime Minister Boris Johnson wrote: ‘On behalf of the whole country, I want to wish you all the very est of luck in today’s final.

‘Your passion for the game, your tenacity in tricky spots and above all your astounding talent on the pitch have already created a summer of fantastic memories for millions of us.

‘You can see it in the sold-out stadia, in the packed fan zonesm in the small children dancing wildly to Sweet Caroline and the TV viewing figures that have seen records crumbling as comprehensively as Sweden’s defence did in the semi-final.

‘In any pride, it is the lionesses who ruthlessly hunt as a team and bring their orize back hom, and I am sure that will be the case against Germany.’
