EPHRAIM HARDCASTLE: Ghost of Christmas past at Sandringham?

The King’s hosting of a traditional family Christmas at Sandringham is a brave move. It seems that there’s a resident poltergeist who throws books and ornaments off shelves, messes with the clocks and switches the lights on and off. A mole whispers that the shattered Wemyss vase marking Queen Victoria’s 1897 Diamond Jubilee, which the King took to BBC1’s The Repair Shop, was one of the poltergeist’s casualties – though Charles didn’t tell his new chum Jay Blades.

At one point Princess Diana’s ghost was said to haunt the house. The late Kenneth Rose’s gossipy diaries tell of an exorcism at Sandringham where the servants were convinced her spirit lurked. She was sent on her way by a medium in the presence of the Queen, Queen Mother and Prue Penn, the QM’s lady-in-waiting.

Princess Michael of Kent’s daughter-in-law Sophie Winkleman, pictured, delivers a festive paean of praise to her in-laws declaring: ‘I cherish my growing closeness to senior members of the Royal Family who are so hard-working, uncomplaining and brave in the face of relentless and brutal media attention, criticism, lies and fictional TV programmes.’ Sophie, sister of Strictly’s Claudia Winkleman, clearly avoids a romantic rhumba with Harry and Meghan’s Netflix ‘truth’.

Brammar, partner of Guardian media editor Jim Waterson, is seeking a ‘brilliant newsroom leader’ to replace her while she takes maternity leave. How about BBC board member Sir Robbie Gibb who has made it his mission to root out Left-wing bias at the broadcaster?

What’s happened to the BBC’s ban on glam rocker Gary Glitter? A cover version of his hit I’m The Leader Of The Gang (I Am) was shown last week in a repeat of a Top Of The Pops from 1993. Will the paedophile, due out next year after being jailed for sex crimes, receive royalties for this Beeb boob?

Rachel Johnson drops names like confetti while discussing the title of Florence + The Machine’s album Lungs and how her son used the term to refer to a teacher in a low-cut top. ‘It’s not Florence Welch’s fault’, she spouts. ‘And I can’t blame her father, Nick Welch, a journalist I commissioned when I was at The Lady, or her uncle, Craig Brown, for this. Or her mother, the new vice-chancellor of Bristol University.’ If Rachel’s brother Boris could warble might he have got a mention?
