The convict, who has not been named, was caught following numerous complaints to police by members of the public back in 2020.

The first time authorities were notified was when a dog owner who spotted dodgy-looking pieces of meat near an olive grove, according to local media reports.

The discovery was made a few metres from the town centre of Torredonjimeno, where officers from Guardia Civil found several pieces of meat with sharp objects hidden inside.

After a series of enquiries, they caught the suspect after he was seen placing the dangerous food in a public place popular with dog walkers before riding off on a moped.

Appearing at the criminal court N4 of Jaén, the man denied his involvement in the baiting but a judge found there was "sufficient evidence to overcome the presumption of innocence".

Sentencing, the judge added the man wanted to "cause the death of the dogs that were walking around the place with their owners and any other animal that passed through the area".

He was convicted on Sunday (February 19) of "continuous offence of unjustified mistreatment of domestic animals with the intention of causing their death" and sentenced to seven months behind bars.

The man was also barred from being involved in any profession, trade or profession related to animals, or from keeping animals, for two years.

Fortunately no animals were killed in the man's evil plot but two dogs needed veterinary treatment after scoffing the baited sausage meat.
