Sun-starved Brits are set to see a glimmer of spring in the coming days, with temperatures predicted to rise “above average” ahead of King Charles III’s Coronation weekend – but there are also fears of thundery outbreaks of rain, according to the latest weather forecast maps and experts. The Met Office is forecasting a “risk of thunderstorms for England and Wales” on Friday, May 5 and weather charts for Saturday show a widespread storm risk on Saturday, May 6 – the day the King will be crowned.

Weather models published by NetWeather.tv show the mercury may hit 20C (68F) in parts of the south east of England on Saturday, May 6 but that there is an increased storm risk on the same day for much of the east of England.

Temperatures further north may struggle to break into double digits on Saturday, May 6, with parts of Scotland not getting over 7C (44F), the maps predict.

Commenting on the outlook for the weekend, British Weather Services meteorologist Jim Dale predicted it would be warm in the sunshine but with the risk of thundery downpours.

Offering a glimpse of hope for those hoping to celebrate the Coronation in the sun, he told Express.co.uk: “The weekend will be showery and thundery in places. Doding the bullets though warm in the sunshine.”

Looking at the week ahead, the Met Office has predicted a “largely settled Wednesday.” The British weather service’s latest update states there is a “risk of southeasterly winds developing later” but temperatures will “slowly recover” by Friday.

Met Office meteorologist Marco Petagna said: “Monday night could be quite chilly at just six to ten degrees into the evening on Monday.

“A touch of frost in several spots by the early hours of Tuesday morning. That takes us then into a much quieter day on Tuesday on the whole plenty of sunshine around just a bit of patchy cloud around to turn the sunshine hazy at times but notice still one or two showers up towards the far north and running down the eastern coast of the UK.”

On the Coronation weekend, the Met Office said: “Confidence is low for this period, with fairly equal chances of fine or changeable weather. However, there is a slightly higher-than-normal chance of unsettled weather in the south.

“Winds expected to be generally light. Temperatures are more likely to be above average overall.”

According to the latest forecast from the MeteoGroup UK Wednesday, May 3 will begin with cloudy spells once again.

The forecasters said: “There is no rain expected through the morning. A band of rain will push across Northern Ireland and Scotland in the afternoon.

“Thursday will be unsettled across southern England with a band of heavy showers pushing in across the afternoon.”
