Five people – including a young girl – were shot at the Mardi Gras Bacchus parade in New Orleans on Sunday evening.

One person was detained at the scene, New Orleans PD Chief Deputy Hans Ganthier said in a press conference. The gunman’s motive remains unclear.

The shooting happened along the parade route around 9:30 p.m. at the intersection of St. Charles and Terpsichore streets. The parade was halted for a short time.

Three males and two females were injured in the shooting, police said. One of the victims was a young girl. All five victims were rushed to a local hospital where one is in critical condition and four are stable.

Ganthier did not say which victim was critical, but noted that the young girl was stable.

The Krewe of Bacchus parade, which is an annual Mardi Gras tradition, was temporarily halted as police roped off part of the area and canvassed for evidence.

Police said two guns were recovered from the scene after the suspect was detained.

‘We were quickly able to apprehend the suspect we believe responsible for this,’ Ganthier said.

He added that he isn’t certain if there was anyone else involved in the shooting, but asked anyone who was at the scene and might have information to call Crimestoppers at 822-1111.

Some parade-goers told WWL-TV they heard at least a dozen shots fired and that they saw people tripping over themselves trying to flee.

‘This is really not something we wanted to see,’ Ganthier said. ‘We really wanted this to be a safe Mardi Gras.’

Photos and videos of the parade route show debris in the street and belongings left behind as many spectators left in a hurry when shots rang out.

The parade resumed later in the evening, but the crowd had thinned.
