Free coffee is BACK at Waitrose! Loyalty card customers will be entitled to complimentary hot drink a day from tomorrow if they bring their own cup – two years after popular perk was axed

  • myWaitrose card holders can finally pick up a free coffee or tea from tomorrow
  • The supermarket scrapped the popular perk in the middle of the pandemic
  • From tomorrow customers can pick up the hot beverage from any of its stores
  • It comes amid slumping sales for the John Lewis Partnership’s supermarket

Free coffee will be available once again in Waitrose from tomorrow in a bid to stop slumping sales amid the soaring cost-of-living crisis.

Any customer with a myWaitrose loyalty card will be able to pick up a free coffee or tea on Monday, two years after the supermarket scrapped the popular perk during the pandemic in June 2020.

Shoppers can claim their hot drink from any of the supermarket’s 331 stores with no minimum spend required.

The only catch is that customers will have to bring their own reusable cups to help the store prevent unnecessary waste.

The return of the deal comes as bosses try to tackle declining sales at supermarkets, with Waitrose shoppers turning to cheaper rivals as inflation rates and food costs across the country rocket.

In September the John Lewis Partnership reported that Waitrose had a five per cent dip in sales in the six months to June as more and more of their customers switched to budget supermarkets in a bid to slash their weekly grocery bill.

Waitrose sales fell in the first half of 2022 to £3.6 billion with profit down by more than £90 million to £432 million.

The free coffee offer was first brought in for all cardholders in 2013, even those who had not bought anything in the store.

In 2017, however, Waitrose updated its policy meaning shoppers needed to buy something before claiming their free drink.

The supermarket later began to ask customers to bring reusable cups.

There will be no minimum spend needed to claim the deal, and non-myWaitrose members will also be able to purchase drinks – with tea from £2.25 and coffees from £2.35.

Customers will now be getting better coffees than previously available, after the supermarket giant teamed up with the popular coffee shop chain Caffe Nero to provide better coffee beans.

Those visiting the store from tomorrow will be able to pick up a free Americano, latte or cappuccino.

Charlotte Di Cello, commercial director for Waitrose said: ‘Our customers loved the myWaitrose free coffee offer, so we are really excited to bring it back, with premium beans from The Nero Roasting Company.

The new partnership between the retail giant and Caffè Nero is among the biggest between a supermarket and coffee shop brand

‘The partnership is an ideal fit, helping customers enjoy quality coffee both in-store or at home – with even more benefits in the pipeline.’

The offer will be available across Waitrose’s 331 UK shops, although not in service stations and garages, from November 7.

Will Stratton-Morris, chief executive of Caffè Nero UK, which has 650 stores, said it ‘feels like a natural collaboration, with customers of each company getting mutual discounts and benefits.
