Video evidence shows Russia has suffered catastrophic military losses after its armoured vehicles were ambushed in Vuhledar.

Dozens of tanks were lost and damaged, with many troops killed in a major humiliation for Vladimir Putin’s forces.

One Russian estimate was that Vladimir Putin’s forces had lost 31 armoured vehicles in the carnage at Vuhledar, known to the Russians as Ugledar.

Russian war channels have denounced their own side for starting the Kremlin’s new offensive with ‘military incompetence’, amid a welter of recriminations for leaving the column as ‘sitting ducks’.

Others are reported to have been captured by the Ukrainians.

‘There are clearly questions for the command in this episode,’ said analyst Boris Rozhin.

‘A lot of equipment was lost and mangled.

‘In fact, the tank company has lost its combat capability.’

Pro-Kremlin pundit Artyom Sheynin said: ‘We are now waiting – will [the authorities] try to hush it up, or sort it out in some more substantive way? Making the right conclusions.’

In a blistering indictment, Ramzai, a pro-war Z-channel, complained: ‘What happened is the consequence of extremely low training of personnel.

‘People are obviously untrained and completely unprepared for action in combat conditions.’

There was a ‘lack of effective interaction between the branches of the armed forces, when the combat group was under enemy fire and did not receive any support, no cover throughout the battle’.

This defeat was due to using ‘low-quality and untrained’ reserves – mobilised by Putin – as ‘independent combat groups’.

Military prosecutors should investigate the role of commanders, said the report.

The British MoD had said earlier: ‘Russian troops likely fled and abandoned at least 30 mostly intact armoured vehicles in a single incident after a failed assault.’

The video evidence supports this conclusion.

Critics attacked the role of controversial East group commander Lt Gen Rustam Muradov, demanding that he should take responsibility for the carnage.

Muradov is a close ally of overall war commander General Valery Gerasimov.
