On screen, she is the squeaky-clean police officer star of BBC’s Happy Valley. But in reality no one is above the law, which Sarah Lancashire learned the hard way as she was hit with a parking ticket last week.

The actress, 58, who plays Police Sergeant Catherine Cawood, looked far from pleased as she peeled the ticket off her car in west London, where she had parked on a street during the prohibited hours of 8am and 6.30pm.

She was also parked with her wheels on the pavement.

It comes ahead of the eagerly anticipated finale of Happy Valley next Sunday. Producers on the hit drama have filmed five different endings in a bid to thwart spoilers.

Viewers were left fearing for Sergeant Cawood’s life after murderer Tommy Lee Royce, played by James Norton, 37, escaped from court where he was being charged with the historic murder of Gary Gaggowski whose remains were washed up on a beach in episode one.

Last night’s episode saw Royce reveal plans to kill Sergeant Cawood after begging accomplice Darius for a gun.

‘Getting even with this b**** is as important as getting to Marbella,’ he said ahead of plans to flee the UK.

‘I’m going to find her. I’m going to follow her. I’m going to bide my time. Going to look for an opportunity, but it would sure as s*** help if I had a gun.’ He also contacted his son Ryan via an online game while in hiding as he tried to convince him to join him in Marbella, Spain.

‘I do love you, you know,’ he said. ‘You’re all I’ve got. You’re all I’ve ever had… think about it. Think about it and we’ll talk like this tomorrow..’ Sergeant Cawood previously appeared to predict Royce’s courtroom break out, saying: ‘I need protection.

Because if he gets out, he’s coming for me.’ The pair had a showdown in series two and look set to come face-to-face again before the series bows out next Sunday.

The first episode in the new series of the gripping drama beat Prince Harry’s long-awaited ITV interview in the TV ratings earlier this month.

The Duke of Sussex’s chat with Tom Bradby brought in 4.1 million viewers, while Happy Valley got nearly 5.3 million when the shows went head-to-head in the same time slot.

Happy Valley is on BBC One, Sunday night at 9pm.
