Harry ‘expected much greater leeway from Royal Family after Megxit’ – expert
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle expected much more leeway from the Royal Family when they decided to branch off on their own and move to America, a royal expert has claimed.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced their decision to step back from their formal royal duties in 2020 but are currently embroiled in a court battle over their demand to have official protection when they make return visits from the US.
Royal commentator Daniela Elser, writing for News.com.au, says the current state of affairs was not what the couple had expected.

She writes: “If there is one thing that has come into focus in the myriad post-mortems of their historic quitting it was that they seemed to have expected much greater acquiesces on the parts of the Royal Family and the Home Office to go along with their plan."
Daniela adds that there’s a “sad symmetry” between Harry and his mother Princess Diana, in that both made decisions that would lead to the loss of their royal protection, but for different reasons.
The Princess of Wales shed her protection officers as part of the paranoia resulting from Martin Bashir and his BBC interview and when she died in the Paris tunnel in August 1997, she had no official protection with her – “in part based on lies and deceit she had been cruelly fed”.
But the Sussexes, who are now “fighting tooth and nail” for the same kind of protection, should have realised what to expect when they stepped back from public life, says Daniela.
“If the princess’s situation was founded on deception then Harry’s looks predicated on naiveties about what he thought would happen after the sonic boom of Megxit,” she writes.
In their bombshell Oprah interview last year, Harry said he and Meghan had been “told at short notice security was going to be removed” and that “my family literally cut me off financially”.
But, says Daniela, “what did the Sussexes think would happen financially and security-wise when they decided they were going to ‘balance’ their time between the UK and North America (as was the initial plan they set out), all the while that they became ‘financially independent’?”

She adds: “Did he really expect that the government and his father would continue to take care of the couple, even once the Sussexes had made the decision to quit royal life wholesale?”
Harry recently won a bid to challenge the government’s decision to deny him public security in the UK.
The Daily Star has approached the Duke and Duchess of Sussex for comment.
