Has Bobby Moore's missing 1966 World Cup shirt been sold again?

Has England captain Bobby Moore’s missing red shirt from the 1966 World Cup-winning campaign been sold again?

  • World Cup winning captain’s family have been appealing for return of red shirt
  • They had last seen it in their attic and did not know how a private buyer had it
  • In a new twist, it’s claimed the initial buyer sold it on to another unknown person

The mystery over Bobby Moore’s missing 1966 shirt deepened yesterday as it was claimed it had been sold on to another private buyer.

The World Cup winning captain’s family have been appealing for the return of the famous England red top.

They last saw it in their attic, so were stunned in 2021 when the Football Association told them it had been ‘found’ in the hands of an anonymous private buyer.

Moore’s ex-wife Tina and their daughter Roberta launched an appeal through the Daily Mail for the person to return it. There was no suggestion the buyer had done anything wrong, having apparently bought the shirt at an auction.

However, yesterday there was a twist as it was claimed the missing shirt’s holder had since decided ‘they did not want the stress’ and had sold it on to another unknown person. It was said the holder had become ‘spooked’ by the attention after the family said the shirt was theirs.

Yesterday one of the authors of an FA book about famous England shirts, who located the Moore shirt two years ago and had planned to include it in the book, said he now had no idea of its whereabouts.

Daren Burney, writing in The Times, has not revealed who had the shirt because they ‘asked to remain anonymous’. But he claimed that while the person ‘was in no doubt of the legality of their ownership, they did not want the stress’ of a dispute with Moore’s family, who are sure the shirt belongs to them.

Mr Burney wrote: ‘We have subsequently been informed by lawyers that it is no longer under the same ownership and we can categorically state that we have no idea where the shirt is now or who owns it.’ He gave no further details about how the shirt was sold or who might have it now.

Tina and Roberta Moore came to the Mail to help publicise their search for the missing shirt after being met by a ‘wall of silence’.

Moore died from bowel cancer in 1993, aged only 51, and Tina, 79, does not know how it went missing from her home in Loughton, Essex, some time in the 1990s. It has been suggested that the England legend, known for his generosity, might have given away his most prized shirt.

The shirt has disappeared from Tina’s collection along with many items of kit – including the valuable yellow shirt he got from Pele

His family say he did give it away – to Tina, when they divorced in 1986, which is why it belongs to her. They say he would never have given away the most important shirt in his career to someone random.

They used to keep all Moore’s match shirts folded in a blue leather bag in their attic, with his trophies and medals on display in cabinets downstairs. She had been searching for it for years, before the FA discovered it had turned up in the hands of a private buyer who had bought it at a mystery auction relating to an ‘unknown deceased man’.

Moore’s teammate Sir Geoff Hurst has led calls for the shirt to be returned to the family, while his old club West Ham and the FA have also thrown their weight behind the campaign for the shirt to be found on behalf of the nation.
