Helicopter crashes near primary school in Melbourne’s south-east

A helicopter crashed into a home near a primary school in Mentone just after 1pm. The pilot, the sole occupant of the aircraft, has been rescued and removed from the scene in an ambulance.

Emergency services were called to the scene in Tylden Court at about 1.15pm.

Victoria Police released a statement a short time later.

“Police are currently in Mentone after a helicopter crashed into the roof of a home this afternoon,” it said.

“The male pilot, a sole occupant, remains trapped in the aircraft while emergency service crews attempt to free him. No one was inside the home at the time of the incident.

“Broome Av and Tylden Court remain closed.”

The scene is near Mentone Park Primary School and not far from Moorabbin Airport.

Dramatic photos emerged shortly after the crash was reported, showing a person being rescued from the wreckage on the roof of a home.

The helicopter appeared to be linked to a scenic flight company, The Helicopter Group (Aust). The company confirmed it was aware of an incident but could not comment further when first contacted.

The company operates out of Moorabbin Airport and runs helicopter winery tours, charter flights, flight training, aerial photography, and crane services in and around Melbourne, according to its website.

Ambulance Victoria said its paramedics were called at about 1.05pm.

“A man, who is in a stable condition, is being assessed by paramedics for lower body injuries,” it said.

“There are no further details at this stage. Another release will be sent when we have an update.”

This is not the first time an aircraft has crashed near Moorabbin Airport, which is located about 21 kilometres south-east of Melbourne’s CBD.

In June 2019, two men walked away with only minor injuries after their plane crashed on a golf course in Melbourne’s south. In June 2018, Mount Martha father of two Anthony Liddell, 50, was killed when the Cessna 172 he was flying plummeted to the ground near Moorabbin Airport just after 5pm.

Moorabbin Airport’s 294-hectare site hosts several flight schools and is the second-busiest airport in Australia, with over 295,000 aircraft movements each year.

Updates to come.
