'Hot' Podium guy is back as he sets up lectern at 10 Downing Street

Podium guy is BACK (and he’s still taken): Social media goes wild as ‘hot’ sound check man sets up 10 Downing Street lectern for Boris Johnson’s resignation speech – three years after he shot to fame at Theresa May’s exit

  • Tobias Gough, 39, became a Twitter sensation after users spotted his good looks
  • He and two colleagues set up podium outside for the PM’s resignation speech
  • But he is married to wife Tina, who wed the sound engineer back in May 2019

The good-looking sound engineer who sent Twitter wild when he helped set up at 10 Downing Street before Theresa May’s resignation speech has returned for Boris Johnson’s this afternoon – to the delight of social media.

Tobias Gough, 39, from Longfield, Kent, was dubbed ‘podium guy’ after Twitter users swooned over his tight black t-shirt and muscly arms before Theresa May’s resignation speech in 2019 and gained an army of adoring fans.

And today Mr Gough was back as the sound engineer and his two colleagues carried the black podium to stand it in front of Number 10’s front door, before Boris Johnson announced he would step down as Prime Minister of the UK.

On Twitter this afternoon, many people swooned over the brown-haired man, with one writing: ‘Waiting for #podiumguy to make his cameo appearance for the final ep of the season…’

One even joked about a career in film and television for Mr Gough, suggesting his talent (or looks) is wasted on just five minutes of fame: ‘That podium guy is gonna have an IMDB profile before long…’

Wife Tina contacted MailOnline in May 2019 to shut down the hopes of his many admirers on social media, to say: ‘He’s my husband!’.

And today, Mr Gough has confirmed to MailOnline that the couple are still happily married.

The handsome ‘podium guy’ who outshone Theresa May at her own resignation speech has done the same once again at Boris Johnson’s this afternoon (pictured setting up the lectern)

Tobias Gough, 39, from Longfield, Kent, became known as ‘podium guy’ after social media users spotted his tight black t-shirt and muscly arms while testing the microphone back in 2019 (pictured then) – and now again in 2022

People on Twitter were left stunned by Mr Gough’s good looks as he appeared on the television screens of the UK for a third time

He also made an appearance for Theresa May’s final speech at PM in July 2019, wowing social media users when he donned a pair of shorts.

Before Boris Johnson addressed the nation to announce his resignation as Prime Minister, ‘Podium Guy’ fans called on him to step into the breach: ‘I vote that we keep “Podium Guy” on as interim and let Boris leave today,’ said one on Twitter this afternoon.

Someone else added: ‘Good to see fit podium guy is still there. Hello indeed,’ followed by a few nervous laughter emojis.

‘The hot guy who did the “check 123” on the podium outside 10 Downing made it all worthwhile,’ another said on Twitter.

Craig Crowther said: ‘Nothing marks big political events in Britain like the return of hot podium guy.’

Another said: ‘Podium guys are en pointe once again.’

In 2019, Mr Gough revealed his surprise at the attention he had received, telling MailOnline at the time that he ‘isn’t model material’.

He said: ‘I have to say it was great lighting to make me look that good, the sun must have been at the right angle.

‘I can assure people that I don’t usually look as well as that – I won’t going to be going into the modelling business just yet.

‘I’m 36 so I think my best days may be well behind me.

‘But it’s been very funny reading all the comments on social media.

Both in 2019 and today, some even joked that he should be the new prime minister, with some suggesting he sits in as the ‘interim’ until a new PM is chosen later this year

‘My phone has been lit up all day by messages from friends and family all poking fun.

‘Some of mates say that I should pose for a 2020 calendar, it’s given me a big laugh.

‘I must have done these sound checks hundreds of times in the 15-years I’ve been in the business and it’s all gone as normal.

‘I’m making sure all the microphones are connected properly ahead of the Prime Ministers resignation speech and about half an hour or so later I’m making the news.

Mr Gough himself said he was surprised at the attention he had received, telling MailOnline following Theresa May’s resignation that he ‘isn’t model material’

Boris Johnson finally announced his resignation today admitting ‘no-one is indispensable’ – but is lining up a ‘unity Cabinet’ as he battles to stay in Downing Street for months longer

‘People nominating me for Prime Minister and showering me with compliments.

‘It’s been a very flattering – if funny – day that’s for sure.’

Mr Gough married wife Tina just two weeks before the chaos in May 2019 in a quiet ceremony in Scotland.

He added: ‘I’ve not spoken to her yet and I’m wondering the reaction I’m going to get but she’s messaged and taken in it all in good spirits.’

Boris Johnson finally announced his resignation today admitting ‘no-one is indispensable’ – but is lining up a ‘unity Cabinet’ as he battles to stay in Downing Street for months longer.

In a statement in Downing Street, the PM tried to strike an upbeat tone as he confirmed his MPs ‘clearly’ want a change and his time in office will come to an end when a new Tory leader is installed.
