How Putin’s winter offensive failed: Russia has exhausted its forces in Bakhmut, Kreminna and Vuhledar – now Ukraine is poised to strike back with its arsenal of new western weapons, says CHRIS PLEASANCE

For the last two months, Putin’s generals have been hurling men, armour and artillery at Ukrainian positions all along the 600-mile front in the east of the country, in some of the deadliest battles of the war.

But, as the dust begins to settle and the blood begins to dry, Russia has almost nothing to show for it.

Putin’s ramshackle army has inched the frontline forward, but failed to make any kind of breakthrough – despite losing up to 1,000 men per day.

Now Ukraine is poised to strike back.
