Huge 1.5m squid washes up on beach leaving holidaymakers stunned

A huge squid measuring a metre and a half has washed up on a beach in Spain leaving holidaymakers stunned and officials puzzled. The giant mollusc appeared on the shore of Playa de Poniente near the town of La Línea de la Concepción in Andalusia, Spain, on Tuesday.

The town council tweeted: “An enigmatic large squid has appeared this Tuesday on the Poniente beach in La Linea, according to the councillor for Beaches of La Linea, Rafael León.

‌”The Department of Beaches has detailed the dimensions of the cephalopod mollusc: a total length of one metre and a half, which has appeared on the shore of the Poniente beach.”

‌The council went on to say Department of Beaches staff notified the Andalusian Marine Environment Management Centre in case it wanted to study the squid as it was “unusual” to find that type of specimen on Cadiz’s coastline.

While Playa de Poniente’s squid drew gasps due to its size, the soft-bodied beast’s dimensions are dwarfed in comparison with the largest specimen so far recorded.

Scientists have recorded a giant squid measuring a staggering 43 feet (13 metres) and possibly weighing almost a ton, according to the Smithsonian Institute.

Elusive creatures, squid are rarely seen as they live deep underwater. People only usually get to see them when they wash up on shore, as in Playa de Poniente this week.

Last year, a squid three metres in length and said to weigh more than 200 kilos was spotted in waters between Tenerife and La Gomera, the second smallest island of the Canary Islands.

News website 20minutos reported it as of the species architeuthis dux, adding that its appearance had surprised marine biologists.

Another squid washed up on the shores of Playa de Gorliz in Spain’s Basque Country, described by news website eitb.us as a “huge” animal.
