A terrifying moment was caught on camera after an Airbus Beluga was spotted being struck by lightning after taking off from a UK airport.

The Beluga XL5 had been struck by a bolt of lightning which caused an "explosion" shortly after it departed Hawarden Airport in Flintshire, Wales, earlier today (Tuesday, November 1).

The aircraft had been set for a flight to Hamburg and had only been in the air for a short period of time before it was struck, WalesOnline reported.

Although the flight continued on as normal and landed in the German city a few hours after its 1pm departure, the strike and subsequent "explosion" were quite the scare.

Dashcam footage in the area captured the strike, which dozens of people reported as having a huge "explosion" sound with it, as well as a bright white flash.

People also reported power cuts and a loss of TV signal in the area following the strike of lightning.

The rainy dashcam footage showcased what appeared to be two bolts of lightning either end of the plane, with an explosive sound grabbing the attention of residents in the area.

A spokesperson for Airbus UK said: "At 1pm today, Beluga XL5 departing Hawarden Airport was struck by lightning.

"This is a routine event in aviation and the aircraft continued with its journey to Hamburg as planned. In accordance with standard operating procedure, the aircraft will be inspected before its next flight."

Residents soon after took to social media where they shared their concerns following the huge bang and flash of lightning, with fire crews spotted heading to the area.

SP Energy Networks said they were aware of the fault, while a spokesperson for North Wales Fire and Rescue Service said: "Two crews were called at 1.12pm to Breeze Hill, Connah’s Quay.

"It was a fault in the electric supply in the area. The building was not on fire."
