BBC newsreader Huw Edwards has revealed that he learnt about the Queen’s death just ten seconds before he had to deliver the news to the nation

In an interview with Radio Times, Mr Edwards, 61, recalled the moment that he found out about Her Majesty’s death.

Despite speculation that Mr Edwards had been told in advance that she had died and had already changed into a black tie, he told the magazine that this was not the case and he did not know when he began broadcasting.

He said: ‘Usually, when you have a breaking story, there’s a lot of shouting in your ear from the gallery, saying: “Go to the news, go to the news”, but this time was different.

‘The announcement came up on the wires and the gallery said: “The announcement is here. Take your time. Speak when you are ready. Don’t rush”.’

Queen Elizabeth’s death certificate revealed that she died at 3.10pm and Mr Edwards broke the news to viewers more than three hours later, at 6.30pm.

He said he had found the five hours prior to the announcement more nerve-wracking as he was worried about making mistakes while filling the air time with BBC colleague Nicholas Witchell.

And while he joked that his mother had messaged him on the day telling him that he looked exhausted, this was only the start of two weeks of intense coverage in the lead-up to the Queen’s funeral.

Taking to Twitter after this many social media users expressed their hopes that the presenter treats himself to a well-deserved break.
