‘I didn’t do it’ says mum accused of stuffing two killed kids into suitcase

A mum has been arrested in connection to the deaths of two children found stuffed into suitcases.

The suspect fiercely denies killing her own kids in New Zealand, repeatedly pleading with police "I didn't do it" as they handcuffed her at 1am on Thursday in Ulsan, South Korea.

It was a horrified family who made the grisly discovery of the young children's bodies after they won the suitcases at auction on August 11 in South Auckland, New Zealand.

The family took items of abandoned belongings home from a storage facility which is when they uncovered the corpses of a seven-year-old and 10-year-old who police believe were murdered in 2018.

Seoul's National Police Agency confirmed on Thursday that a 42-year-old woman had been arrested on suspicion of murder and New Zealand Police are working to have her extradited to the country.

Photographs of the murder suspect following her arrest show her covering her face with a hood and repeatedly said "I didn't do it", according to Yonhap News Agency.

Seoul's National Police Agency said in a statement: "Police arrested the suspect at an apartment in Ulsan on Thursday following a stakeout with tips on her whereabouts and CCTV footage.

"The suspect is accused by the New Zealand Police of having murdered two of her children, aged 7 and 10 then, in around 2018 in the Auckland area.

"She's been found to have arrived in South Korea after the crime and has been in hiding ever since."

South Korean news website Chosun.com now reports for the first time that the victims were a boy and girl.

Korean, NZ Police and Interpol hunted down the woman using her medical records and phone number and efforts are underway to have her flown to New Zealand to face murder charges in court.

Detective inspector Tofilau Fa'amanuia Vaaelua said: "To have someone in custody overseas within such a short period of time has all been down to the assistance of the Korean authorities and the co-ordination by our NZ Police Interpol staff.

"In the meantime, there is a number of inquiries to be completed both in New Zealand and overseas."
