The family and friends of a man stabbed to death in regional Victoria have remembered the grandfather-to-be as a caring man with a “heart of gold”.
Clint Allen, 38, was walking home after a night out celebrating his wife’s birthday when he was fatally injured outside The Criterion Hotel in Sale in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Police allege Allen was stabbed in the chest during an altercation with a group of unknown males outside the venue. Officers provided first aid to Allen until the ambulance arrived, but he died at the scene.
“I watched him die on the side of the road on the footpath,” Allen’s wife Bek told Nine News.
“They tried to work on him. They couldn’t bring him back.”
Allen, a cabinetmaker, had moved to Gippsland from Melbourne with his family in January after returning to Victoria from a year-long trip around Australia.
He was five weeks away from becoming a grandfather.
“We just sort of put a dot on the map, through Sale looks alright, but clearly not,” Bek said.
“We were just one of those stupidly in-love couples all lovey after 12 years.”
Friends described Allen as a generous man “who would give you the shirt off his back”.

“Clint was the guy with a heart of gold and whatever room he walked in within five minutes he’d be everyone’s friend,” Adrian Yarzabal said.
“He’d be the guy who over a couple of beers would sit there and have some of the worst dad jokes you’d ever hear.”
Another friend said Allen would cheer for you when you were kicking goals and cheer for you when you were struggling.
Police arrested and charged 20-year-old Sale man Spencer Shumski with Allen’s murder on Sunday.

Shumski appeared in Sale Magistrates’ Court charged on Monday where he was remanded in custody until his next appearance on September 19.
The court heard it was Shumski’s first time in custody.
Police have called for anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward.
