‘I’m bleeding everywhere’ – 911 calls tell of moment mass shooter opens fire

Twelve people were killed in a horror mass shooting as a gunman opened fire at a bar in California.

Earlier this year, Ventura County sheriff's office released the harrowing audio of 911 phone calls made from the scene as killer Ian David Long, 28, started shooting at revellers and staff alike at the Borderline Bar and Grill in Thousand Oaks on this day in 2018 (November 7).

One woman told dispatchers on the other end of the phone: "I've been hit, I'm bleeding everywhere, people are running everywhere. This is not good."

Another man said he saw that several people had been killed and said they were "hit and they're down."

Meanwhile law enforcement personnel also released body camera footage, showing people frantically running towards sheriff's deputies who attended the scene, the Daily Mail reported.

One woman fleeing the scene could be heard yelling: "Help me please, he's shooting."

When one dispatcher asked another woman if she saw the shooting, she said: "It's still happening!"

Others didn't flee but instead managed to find a safe place to hide.

One who called the emergency line whispered: "We're hiding. The guy's probably still here," while one man said he was "upside down" so couldn't see what was happening.

Witnesses later described the suspect as a white male wearing a black hat, a black shirt and blue jeans, who was later identified as Long.

The ex-army veteran, who killed a total of 11 other people that night, fatally shot himself at the scene.

Among those who died was a police officer, Helus, 54, who had been shot five times by Long – but it was determined afterward that the bullet that had actually killed him was a sixth that had been fired by Todd Barratt, a highway patrolman who had been firing at Long but accidentally hit Helus in the chest.

Fifteen others were injured during the incident.

Long, 28, entered the bar at around 11:18pm on the evening of November 7th with the intent to kill.

It is thought his motive was that he didn't believe college students, who frequented the bar, respected veterans and treated them with disdain.

The calls and footage were released in January of this year, just over three years after the fatal shooting, after news outlets including the Associated Press wanted the evidence released under public record laws.
