The 34-year-old, who went by Brother Three Thousand' on Douyin, China’s version of TikTok, was found dead just 12 hours after he livestreamed for his fans last Tuesday (May 16).

On the day of his death, he took part in an influencer battle, competing with fellow internet stars to earn the most amount of gifts from fans in a limited time.

As punishment for losing three of his rounds, he drank at least seven bottles of baijiu, viewers told the BBC.

After Wang ended his livestream at around midnight on Tuesday, he was found dead on Wednesday afternoon.

"When his family found him, he was already gone, he didn't even get a chance for emergency treatment," a man named Mr Zhao, who claimed to be his friend, told local media.

The social media app he was popular on already bans users for drinking during livestreams.
