Is Justice Stephen Breyer a Republican or a Democrat?
Breyer is a registered Democrat and is one of the three remaining liberal justices.
The Supreme Court currently has a 6-3 conservative majority.
Associate Justices Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan, also fall within the liberal category.
Breyer was one of four Justices to vote against overturning Roe v. Wade on Friday, June 24, 2022. The other three Justices included: Sotomayor, Kagan, and John G. Roberts, Jr.

Breyer instead, believes in considering the practical consequences of case decisions.

Who is Justice Stephen Breyer?
Stephen G. Breyer is one of the longest-serving Justices currently appointed to the Supreme Court.
At 83, Breyer is the court's oldest member.
Breyer attended the following schools to prepare on becoming a lawyer: Harvard Law School (1964), Magdalen College (1961), Stanford University (1959), and Lowell High School (1955).
He was nominated by President Bill Clinton on May 17, 1994, and has served since August 3, 1994.
On January 26, 2022, it was first announced that Justice Breyer will be retiring from his position as Associate Justice.
On June 29, the Court announced his official last day on the bench would be Thursday, June 30.
Breyer replaced retiring justice Harry Blackmun and is now on the other side of that experience.
Why is Justice Stephen Breyer retiring?
Liberals and progressives alike have called for Breyer's retirement in hopes that they do not lose another seat in the Supreme Court to a Republican president appointee.
The fear is that if Breyer "should continue in office and pass away while a Republican is in the White House, then the court's conservative majority could be further strengthened," according to Newsweek.
Who will be replacing Justice Stephen Breyer?
Ketanji Brown Jackson was confirmed by the Senate on Thursday, April 7, to replace Breyer after he retires.
She will be the first Black female Supreme Court justice.

Jackson was raised in Miami, Florida and earned a BA in government from Harvard College in 1992.
Four years later, she graduated cum laude from Harvard Law School.
