Jilted barmaid threatened to 'chop up and torture' ex-lover

Jilted barmaid threatened to ‘chop up and torture’ ex-lover on Saddleworth Moor where child killers Myra Hindley and Ian Brady buried their victims: Mother-of-one who bombarded ex with slew of abusive, foul-mouthed messages avoids jail

  • Pair remained friends for several years after one-night stand in 2017
  • Court told relationship turned sour when he started dating someone else

A barmaid threatened to have one of her regulars tortured and ‘chopped up’ on the Moors where murderers Myra Hindley and Ian Brady killed their victims after she learnt he had a new girlfriend.

Kerry Brown, 40, bombarded former lover Mark Carpenter with abusive texts and voice notes making reference to Saddleworth Moors in Greater Manchester where Hindley and Brady buried their child victims in the 1960s.

In a series of late-night messages, Brown, a mother-of-one, told Mr Carpenter: ‘I’m going to tie you up and I’m going to tear your head off. You need a trip to Saddleworth Moor, you’ll be chopped up and tortured.’

She also mocked the fact Mr Carpenter was recovering from a stroke and told him: ‘I hate your f***ing guts you know. Maybe your stroke was karma.’

A court heard the pair who met while Brown was working behind the bar at the White Hart pub in Droylsden, had shared a one-night stand in 2017.

The 40-year-old, who now works part-time in a McDonald’s, slept with Mr Carpenter in 2017

They had remained friends after the fling with Mr Carpenter lending money to Brown when she needed cash and he also allowed her to rent his holiday home in Cyprus. But she flew into a rage when he started dating someone else.

In a statement, Mr Carpenter said: ‘I have never done anything wrong to Kerry. She has left me feeling incredibly upset, especially because I received a lot of the messages at unsociable hours.

‘I am still recovering from a stroke I had recently and these constant calls from withheld numbers just to threaten me are totally unprovoked.

‘This has left me feeling scared to see Kerry if I leave the house. I don’t know what she is capable of.

Overall, this has left me feeling mentally and physically drained.’

At Manchester magistrates court, Brown, who lives in the city’s Clayton district and who now works in a MacDonald’s burger bar, admitted harassment between October last year and April this year and was sentenced to a 12-month community order.

She must complete 20 rehabilitation activity hours and 150 hours of unpaid work, and pay £85 in court costs and the £114 statutory surcharge.

A 12-month restraining order was also imposed between her and Carpenter, barring her from attending his address in Ashton-under-Lyne

A 12-month restraining order was also imposed between her and Carpenter, barring her from attending his address in Ashton-under-Lyne.

Steve Woodman, prosecuting, said: ‘Mr Carpenter has known the defendant for 20 years, and they first became acquainted while she was working as a barmaid at The White Hart in Droylsden, his local.

‘The pair slept together on one occasion in 2017 but have since kept a distant friendship.

‘They would occasionally check in with each other via text, but would rarely meet.

Mr Carpenter allowed the defendant to rent out his holiday home in Cyprus a couple of times throughout 2018.

The defendant also asked to borrow £250, which Carpenter sent to her. She sent the full amount back soon after.

‘She later asked for another £500 from him. He sent her the money, but never received repayment. He assumed she needed the money because she was struggling at that time and didn’t follow her up about it.

‘The messages sent between the two parties were friendly at first, but at one point during October 2022, the defendant called him a ‘c**t.’

‘She also started to get angry when he didn’t respond to her messages. In response, he told her it would be inappropriate because he had a girlfriend.

Mr Carpenter had met Kerry Brown when she was a barmaid at the White Hart in Droylsden

‘Throughout October, the defendant accused him of several serious allegations in mostly lengthy paragraph messages that did not make much sense. He told her to not contact him any more after receiving these messages, but she persisted, sending longer paragraphs of abuse.

‘One of the paragraphs said, ‘I hate your f*****g guts, you know,’ and ended with ‘maybe your stroke was karma.’

Mr Woodman said the messages subsided for a while, but then, seemingly out of nowhere, they started again in February of this year.

‘They started to become more direct and threatening in their tone, with her saying I’m going to tie you up and tear your head off. She also said: ‘You need a trip to Saddleworth Moor, you’ll be chopped up and tortured’.

‘Mr Carpenter reported Brown to the police, and she was arrested on the 6th of March.

‘She gave a no comment interview and was released with no contact bail conditions.

Soon after her release, she breached her bail conditions by messaging Carpenter.

‘She said: ‘thanks a lot, I really appreciated spending 30 hours in a cell. I’m going to break my bail to tell you I’m going to make you look like an absolute kn*b’.

‘She was arrested again on the 11th of April and gave full admissions in her second interview.’

Brown has no previous convictions, but had a caution for sending malicious communications in 2021.

In mitigation, her lawyer Osman Munir said, ‘She regrets her actions, so much so that she attempted an overdose two weeks ago. However, she lives in stable accommodation and works part-time at a McDonald’s branch local to her.’

Before she was released from the docks, Jonathan Vallance, chairman of the magistrates, said, ‘I hope we don’t see you back in this court. To this, she responded, ‘not this court.’

He quickly corrected her, saying, ‘any court’.

She then left the dock shaking. Before leaving the room, she said: ‘He’s lying.’
