  • Castleford Tigers star Joe Westerman was caught on film performing a sex act
  • He was given a significant fine by the club and returned to training today

Disgraced rugby league star Joe Westerman has broken cover for the first time after he was caught performing a sex act on his friend’s wife in an alleyway.

The 33-year-old was seen training with his Castleford Tigers teammates earlier today as the club prepares for the start of the new Super League season this week.

The back rower was present despite receiving a significant fine from the club after the x-rated video emerged on social media over the weekend.

Westerman had apologised although his heartbroken wife, Lauren, is understood not to have spoken to him since and has turfed him out of their family home.

After the footage went viral on social media Lauren, who married Westerman in 2014, told MailOnline she was focusing on protecting their three children.

The mother-of-three said: ‘I just wish it had never happened. My poor children!’

She added: ‘I haven’t really spoken to my husband. I’m seeing to all the children.’

The footage, which went viral after being posted on Twitter, showed the 6ft 4in tall rugby player in an alleyway with his trousers down performing a sex act on a woman.

After the video was shared a furious Lauren posted: ‘Can I make this VERY clear that this is NOT me!!!!!! We have three children one of whom is almost 15 and she doesn’t need to see things like this all over social media!’

Speaking last night Mrs Westerman said she was looking after her children on her own, and added: ‘There’s nothing I want to say to be honest. I don’t think anything I say is going to help.’

The Sun reports her husband, who has two caps for England, has been kicked out of their family home.

Castleford Tigers said the player is ‘incredibly remorseful for his actions’.

Making a statement through the club, Westerman said: ‘Firstly, I would like to take this opportunity to wholeheartedly apologise to my family and friends for my actions.

‘I’d also like to apologise to the supporters, sponsors, staff and directors of Castleford Tigers as well as my teammates.

‘I’d like to extend this apology to the game of rugby league, and I have realised that I need to work on my decision-making around alcohol.’

Castleford Tigers said: ‘The Club and its Welfare Officers, in conjunction with Rugby League Cares, will continue to support Joe and his family throughout this difficult time and will make no further comment.’

A statement from the club earlier read: ‘Castleford Tigers are aware of a video involving a player that circulated on social media.

‘This issue is currently being dealt with internally and the club will make no further comment at this time.’

The furore comes just ahead of the 2023 Super League, which starts on Thursday.

Westerman, pictured here with his wife Lauren, has apologised for his actions while his club have fined him

The back rower had issued a grovelling apology after the video was shared and went viral on social media

His wife Lauren, pictured here with her husband, told MailOnline yesterday she had not spoken to him since the video was released

His club Castleford Tigers have given him a ‘significant’ fine and ordered him to take part in community events

Originally from Pontefract, West Yorkshire, Westerman started his career with Castleford Tigers in 2007 after graduating from junior club the Featherstone Lions.

He played at Castleford for three years until switching to Hull FC in 2011 in one of the highest transfer fees the club had ever paid, before moving to Warrington in 2015 for a three-year deal worth £150,000.

After a brief stint playing for Toronto Wolfpack in 2017, he returned to his old club Hull FC, citing his love for the club and coach Lee Radford.

In 2019 while playing for Hull, Westerman shocked crowds when he slapped his dislocated knee back into place while lying prone on the floor, before playing on.

After his knee buckled beneath him following a tackle, Westerman was visibly in pain and cried out in agony.

But TV replays showed him quickly hitting his crooked knee in an attempt to get it back into place.

He managed to carry on playing, even though Hull FC fell to an 18-10 defeat in the derby clash.

In 2022, he returned to his first club, Castleford Tigers, on a two-year contract.

At the time, a thrilled Westerman told the BBC: ‘Since I was a young kid, I have always supported Cas [Castleford].

‘My whole family around me support Cas so it will be good, and it is something I am really looking forward to.

Social media users were sent into a frenzy when the raunchy video was shared online

‘From being a kid and supporting them to now, where they are up there with some quality players, it is really exciting.

‘The standard is really high now and I just want to get there and play well for my hometown club next year.’

Since the graphic video appeared online yesterday, media users have been quick to share memes about the affair.

Westerman’s Wikipedia page was altered to include the jibe: ‘He is known to frequent the alleyway next to Greggs Bakery in Pontefract town centre.’

One person said: ‘No matter how bad your Monday is at least you’re not Joe Westerman rocking up at training today.’

A second added: ‘By far the worst thing to come from the Joe Westerman situation is my own mother sending me a meme about it.’
