Alcaraz was initially stunned into a 6-1 defeat in just 34 minutes in the opening set, however the tournament’s latest star managed to pull it back to 1-1 in the second.

He then got revenge on his adversary, winning 6-1 himself in the third.

Djokovic regained momentum in the fourth set, cruising through with a series of powerful shots against his young opponent to level the match 2-2.

However it was the Spaniard who had the last laugh, falling to his knees as he sent his winning shot across the net – after claiming a 3-2 victory in a match that had seemed impossible.

Alcaraz’s victory makes him the first player outside the ‘big four’ – Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray – to win the men’s single since 2002.

The win follows his first grand slam title after winning the US Open last year.

The last time 36-year-old Djokovic lost on centre court, Carlos was still in primary school.

After he was handed the trophy by Princess Kate, the new world number one said it was a ‘dream come true’ to win Wimbledon and ‘make history in this beautiful tournament’.

The Princess, 41, was joined by her children Prince George and Princess Charlotte on the final day of the tournament in SW19.

Princess Charlotte was pictured donning a pair of pink sunglasses as she sat next to her brother and parents.

Both children were seen thoroughly engrossed in the day’s tennis, with Prince George watching the action with his head in his hands at points.
