King Charles modernises Queen’s Windsor estate with electric car charging points

King Charles is modernising the late Queen's beloved Windsor estate by installing electric car charging points throughout the grounds.

The monarch has never seemed keen in the past to move into the Berkshire residence thanks to the noise from planes taking off and landing at Heathrow Airport.

But it would appear Charles has had a change of heart and has set about giving the historic castle a revamp for the modern age.

New electric car charging points are being installed throughout the grounds and thousands of new tree saplings are also being planted.

Workmen have also been spotted refurbishing Queen Elizabeth's private apartments and some of her belongings have been put into storage to make way for Charles' own treasured possessions, including artwork and treasured antiques.

"The King is making the castle more to his taste, as would be expected, and bringing in some of his favourite pieces of art and possessions to make it feel more homely," a source told MailOnline.

Windsor was one of the late Queen's favourite residences and she and Prince Philip spent most of their weekends there as the pair grew older – and even moved in full-time during the pandemic.

Charles, on the other hand, has always preferred Highgrove – his own Gloucestershire estate he bought in 1980.

But the King started spending more time at Windsor before his mother died, hoping to spend more quality time with her, and after her death in September has continued visiting the residence more often – and for longer periods of time while Buckingham Palace is under renovation.

And now that Prince William and Kate Middleton have also moved to Windsor, the King will be able to spend more time with his grandchildren Louis, George and Charlotte.

Although Charles and Queen Consort Camilla have had most of their belongings moved to the monarch's official residence, they actually still live at their home in Clarence House.

The news comes after Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were served an eviction notice from their own property at Windsor, Frogmore Cottage.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who have called California their home since 2020, confirmed last week they had been asked to leave the 10-bed suite and are expected to be out shortly after Charles' upcoming coronation.

The couple were gifted the cottage in 2018 by the late Queen after their wedding and have since poured £2.4million into making the property feel like home.

The recent move is understood to have left the couple "stunned".

"It all feels very final and like a cruel punishment," Meghan's friend and author of the book Finding Freedom, Omid Scobie, said of the news.

"It’s like [the family] want to cut them out of the picture for good."

He added: "It’s news, sources tell me, that has left Harry and Meghan stunned, and at least two members of the Royal Family 'appalled'."

It's been widely reported that Princess Eugenie will be moving into Frogmore Cottage.
