‘Luckiest man on Earth’ who won £1.6bn on lottery goes on £24m spending spree

The winner of a record lottery jackpot, who scooped $2.04billion (£1.6bn) and vowed to stay out of the limelight, has gone on a $30million (£24.22m) spending spree.

Edwin Castro from California, US, netted the record-breaking Powerball prize in November last year.

The winning ticket was sold at Joe's Service Center in Altadena, a community in the foothills north-east of Los Angeles.

CBS dubbed Castro "the luckiest guy around" and reported that he has just purchased another home for $4m (£3.23m) in Altadena, close to the gas station where he purchased his winning ticket.

This comes after he forked out a whopping $25m (£20.19m) for a Hollywood Hills "bachelor pad", the publication stated.

The most recent purchase is a five-bedroom, four-bath home "modern home with Japanese influence and Palm Springs vibes", according to Dirt.com.

The house contains an art studio and a soundproof movie theatre, gym, infinity pool, outdoor kitchen and outside pond.

If that wasn't enough, it's also got a cold plunge pool, wine cellar and sauna.

Castro came forward more than three months after purchasing the winning ticket, despite California law stating that a winner doesn't have to go public.

Joe Chahayed, the owner of Joe's Service Center, got a $1m (£821,613) bonus for selling the winning ticket.

Castro declined an invitation from state officials to speak to reporters in November after his win.

Instead, he sent a written statement that said he was "shocked and ecstatic" to have won the lottery.

The lottery that Castro won was the largest in US history because it took so long for someone to choose the correct combination of six numbers to win the prize.

The Powerball jackpot starts at $20m and increases each time there is no winner. There were more than 40 consecutive drawings before Castro's numbers were called: 10, 33, 41, 47 and 56, plus the red Powerball was 10.
