Three teens charged with murder of 16-year-old in Sydney’s west after ‘fight over girl’

Three teenagers have been charged following an investigation into the alleged fatal stabbing of a 16-year-old boy in Sydney’s west last month, which police believe came after a fight over a girl.

On June 4, emergency services were called to Australis Drive in Ropes Crossing near Mount Druitt just before 3am following reports a stabbing had occurred at a small gathering at a home.

Police arrived to find Alosceous Jay Samarawickrama, who was about to start his air-conditioning apprenticeship before the attack, with a single stab wound to his chest. Paramedics performed CPR on the teenager but he died at the scene.

Last week, detectives released CCTV footage to the public of the three men they believed to be involved in the incident.

Following its release, police conducted two search warrants on Thursday morning at homes in St Marys and Marayong, in Sydney’s west, and seized a number of items for forensic examination.

Two teenage boys, both aged 17, were arrested at each home. A third teen, 16, was arrested at Tregear near St Marys a short time later.

All three teenagers were taken to Mt Druitt police station. They were each charged with murder, affray, and wielding a knife in a public place.

They were refused bail and will appear at a children’s court on Friday.

Police believe the fight over a girl was the cause of the stabbing. The victim was not known to police.

Shortly after the incident, Mount Druitt’s Detective Chief Inspector Paul Tickner said police were investigating whether a kitchen knife in a nearby drain was used in the stabbing.

“Young boys probably with hormones running through their system and somebody thought they had to defend the right of their girlfriend at the scene and that has led to a young boy being killed,” he said.

“They shouldn’t be carrying knives in the first place.”
