A MAN is seriously injured after being crushed by a urinal while working in central London.

Emergency services rushed to Cambridge Circus near Shaftesbury Avenue just after 1pm today.

Some 25 firefighters and paramedics worked for more than two hours to free the trapped man before he was airlifted to hospital.

Police closed the surrounding roads outside the Palace Theatre, where Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is being performed.

A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police said: "Police were called at around 1.10pm on Friday, January 27 to a seriously injured man at Cambridge Circus, W1.

"The man is thought to have sustained crush injuries while working on a ‘telescopic urinal’ at the location."

A London Ambulance Service spokesperson added: "We sent a number of resources to the scene, including an ambulance crew, members of our hazardous area response team (HART), members of our tactical response unit and a medic in a fast response car.

"We also dispatched London’s Air Ambulance."

The worker is understood to have been carrying out maintenance work on a pop-up urinal which rises from the ground at night.
