A man drove into several pedestrians in a parking garage at a German airport on Friday, leaving some people injured, police said.

The 57-year-old also drove into several cars at the Cologne-Bonn Airport found in the west of the country.

Police said there were indications that the man had mental health issues.

Driving a rental car, the man injured ‘five or six’ people in the incident, two of them police officers, a spokesperson said. The suspect was detained and brought to a hospital in Cologne, and is set to be admitted to a closed psychiatric ward.

The man resisted arrest before being overpowered by police. It was at that point that the officers recieved slight injuries.

It is understood that the suspected attack was carried out at 9.30am local time in the airport’s P2 carpark, where the driver smashed through the barrier.

‘He apparently drove towards several cars and pedestrians, who were able to avoid him,’ said a police spokesman, according to German tabloid Bild.

Police said that nobody’s life is in danger, despite the perpetrator driving ‘back and forth again and again,’ they said.

‘He rammed several vehicles with a black rental van,’ police spokesman Christoph Gilles said, according to Build. An Audi A5 was hit with ‘full force’ after the driver crashed through the barrier system controlling the entrance to the car park.

He also hit a Kia and a Volvo parked inside, he said.

No other details on the incident were immediately available.
