Meghan Markle was never likely to attend coronation due to ‘impossible position’

Meghan Markle was "never likely" to come to King Charles' coronation after being put in an "impossible position", according to a royal source.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will spend the day of the coronation apart after Prince Harry announced he would attend the ceremony alone, while Meghan would stay in California with the couple's children.

Rumours over why Meghan decided to remain stateside on the historic day have flown – but one insider said the choice was inevitable.

The royal source told the Mirror: “The truth of the matter is the Duchess was never likely to attend the coronation.

“The mood from California was that she felt increasingly put in an impossible position and there’s a fair sense of relief that the situation is resolved after so much speculation and uncertainty.

“It is one thing to attend the late Queen’s funeral out of respect for Her Majesty but another thing entirely to attend the start of a new reign.”

Meghan and Harry have been distanced from the Royal Family since they relocated to Montecito, California, in a move dubbed "Megxit".

But tensions reached all-new highs when Harry released his instant best-seller memoir, Spare, earlier this year, which saw him hit out at his royal relatives.

Other insiders suggested the foundations were laid for Meghan to skip the lavish event after she was notably absent from her husband’s book tour earlier this year.

There has also been speculation the Duchess was left upset at her children being left out of the coronation procession.

Meanwhile the couple's biographer Omid Scobie suggested Harry's visit to the UK will likely be a short one and confirmed Archie's birthday “played a factor in the decision” for Meghan to stay behind.

And royal expert Gertrude Daly of Gert's Royals told the Daily Star earlier this week Harry's own attendance was out of obligation.

"The news that just Prince Harry will be attending the coronation is not a surprise to anyone. Prince Harry's attendance is more out of obligation rather than anything else," Daly said.

"Duchess Meghan was invited to the Coronation. It would have been the Sussexes' decision to just send Prince Harry. I think The Sussexes want to protect themselves and their children from the 'vicious and racist' UK media as much as possible."

"I that Meghan's absence will mean less of a distraction from the Coronation events," she added.
