Moment cops spoke to nurse, 24, for 'welfare check' on the day she vanished | The Sun

A POLICE bodycam shows the moment cops spoke to a missing student nurse as part of a "welfare check" on the day she mysteriously vanished.

Owami Davies, 24, from Grays, Essex, left her family home on July 4 and was reported missing two days later.

On Saturday, the Met revealed its officers had spoken to Owami in Croydon, south London, on July 6.

Body-worn cameras worn by officers in Croydon show her looking dishevelled, The Mirror reports.

Hours later she was seen on CCTV shortly after midnight on July 7 in a shop in Derby Road, West Croydon, before vanishing.

Ms Davies's family reported her missing on July 6 to Essex Police who handed the investigation to the Metropolitan Police on July 23.

The Independent Office of Police Conduct is now looking into the handling of the case.

In a statement, the Met said officers were called to an address in Clarendon Road, Croydon, to concerns over the welfare of a woman.

Cops and London Ambulance Service attended the address and spoke to the woman, but she said she did not want help and left.

It was only later that the woman was identified as missing Owami.

The force said its professional standards body was consulted and is not investigating the officers.

Scotland Yard said: "The interaction recorded on the officers' body-worn video has been viewed by members of the Independent Advisory Group and Owami's family to ensure openness and transparency."

The IOPC said: "We can confirm that we received a referral on August 5 from the Metropolitan Police Service in relation to contact officers had with Owami Davies in Croydon on July 6, after she had been reported missing to Essex Police.

"We are currently assessing the available information to determine what further action may be required."

A missing person case was opened by cops following Owami's disappearance.

Two men from Croydon have since been arrested on suspicion of murder and three others on suspicion of kidnap.

All five between the ages of 23 and 32 have since been released on bail.

Officers have downloaded around 50,000 hours of CCTV to investigate the mystery and have trawled through 10,000 hours already.

'PRINCESS'

The force issued a fresh appeal at the start of the week, saying Ms Davies could be in Croydon and "in need of help".

Owami had holidays booked with her mother and brothers to Spain and Disneyland Paris.

She is nicknamed "Princess" because of her love of Disney.

The nursing student is said to have been "really happy" with only two months left of her course at university.

She is interested in doing research on diseases after working in A&E during the Covid pandemic.

Owami has secured a job at Guy's and St Thomas's health trust in London upon her graduation.

The young woman's mum, Nicol Davies, 46, is distraught with her daughter missing.

She said: "I sit here as a desperate mother at the mercy of anyone that knows or heard something to help me find my baby, that's all I'm asking, just help to find her.

"Or her, if she's somewhere and hears this, to please come home. We miss her so much, her brothers and myself miss her, need her.

"We are not complete, we just want her to come home and, again, if she is listening she should know she's not in trouble."

On Thursday, British Transport Police tweeted that the 24-year-old could still regularly be taking trains, may appear dazed or confused and may be seeking to engage with women travelling alone.

BTP wrote: "We know Owami Davies, 24, regularly uses the rail and tube network to travel from #Grays, Essex to the #Croydon area.

"Often via #WestHam and #WestCroydon stations. @metpoliceuk are looking at dates from 7th July 2022 onwards.

"Owami may still be regularly travelling by rail in a vulnerable state, appearing dazed or confused and possibly seeking to engage with other lone female travellers."
