More than 100 firefighters battle huge wildfire sending large plume of smoke into the sky near Heathrow airport

Around 100 firefighters are tackling a huge grass fire near Heathrow airport in West London, according to the London Fire Brigade.

A video shows a large plume of smoke shooting into the sky from a field near Hatton Road in Feltham on Monday, August 1 as a plane approaches the airport. 

London Fire Brigade tweeted that around six hectares of grassland were alight and a ‘large amount’ of smoke was being produced.   

They said: ’15 fire engines and around 100 firefighters are tackling a grass fire near Hatton Road in Feltham.’

Around six hectares of land are alight and producing a large amount of smoke, they added. They said residents should keep their windows and doors closed.

The cause of the fire is not known and it began just before 2.50pm this afternoon. 

A Heathrow spokesperson said the fire meant they alternated their runways for the afternoon but confirmed flights had not been affected. 

Heathrow Noise, which provides live runway updates, said: ‘Good afternoon, due to smoke from a fire off-airport we will be switching back to landing on the northern runway (27R) and taking off from the southern runway (27L). We apologise for the disruption.’
