More than half of Poundland items now cost more than a pound.

In a bid to compete with rivals such as Asda, B&M and Wilko, the budget retailer began selling clothing and home goods in 2017.

In an update yesterday, Poundland’s Polish owner Pepco said 58 per cent of items sold in the year to the end of September were outside the £1 price point – both above and below. It comes as consumers face a major squeeze on family finances amid the soaring cost of living – with inflation now running at more than 11 per cent.

A Poundland spokesman said: ‘Poundland’s “simple pricing” move which began in 2017 has always predominantly been about extending our product ranges – including clothing, homewares, toys, garden and fitness – where we know we can offer customers incredible value.’
