A traumatised mother has opened up about the years of abuse she suffered at the hands of her controlling ex, who punched, spat at and coercively controlled her throughout their three-year relationship.

Jessica Mobley, 31, was terrorised and beaten by Richard Wells, 41, for almost the entire duration of their relationship but fell ‘completely under his spell’.

It wasn’t until he told her to hit their son that the mother-of-two found the courage to leave and report him for his campaign of terror.

‘That was the last straw. I told him ”no” and he spat in my face and beat me. I’d had enough. The threat of him hurting [their son] made my blood boil,’ she said, opening up about the abuse she suffered.

Wells was jailed in April for 32 months after he admitted to engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour during the course of the relationship.

The couple met in 2016 when Jessica was just 25. They bumped into one another while Wells was walking his dog and realised they lived on the same street.

After that first encounter, she often would see him while completing the school run with her daughter, and was taken aback by how ‘friendly and chatty’ he seemed.

When Jessica split from her then-partner, Wells started helping her around the house and within a few months they were dating.

Just two weeks into the relationship, Wells physically assaulted Jessica for the first time.

‘I went round one evening and, out of the blue he called me a ”sly girl”. I laughed nervously and he punched me straight in the face,’ she said.

She tried to flee but he ‘rugby tackled’ her and dragged her back inside, she said.

Eventually, she escaped and took refuge at a friend’s house nearby.

By morning, Wells was profusely apologising. He said his dad was dying and blamed the violence on alcohol.

‘Already under his spell, I forgave him,’ she said.

By November of that year, Jessica had fallen pregnant. Initially, Wells appeared over the moon and was a doting boyfriend.

It wasn’t until Jessica caught him sending messages to another woman and she confronted him about it that he once again turned violent.

She says: ‘He shoved me into the bath and I fell on my stomach. I immediately felt a strong pain in my side. I knew something was wrong.’

By this point, Wells controlled Jessica’s every move.

‘He’d ring me constantly and if I didn’t answer straight away, he’d attack me when I got home. I felt trapped.’

In July 2017, Jessica fell pregnant with their son, now four.

She hoped the pregnancy would prompt Wells to stop the abuse and leave her alone.

‘He acted like the perfect partner. I was scared I wouldn’t be believed if I told anyone.’

Behind closed doors, he would pull her hair and twist her wrists.

Even throughout childbirth, Wells was abusive. Jessica said he pretended to care and acted the part while midwives were in the room, rubbing her back and waiting on her.

But the moment they left the birthing suite, he’d call her names and demanded they leave as soon as their son was born.

‘As I puffed and panted during labour, he verbally abused me… All that night, he continued to terrorise me,’ she said.

In February 2019, Wells attacked her again, punching her in the face. She had to wear make-up to cover the bruises. Then in April, Wells came home drunk one evening.

He saw their son playing in mud in the garden and told Jessica she should hit him for getting dirty.

That was the final straw. She took her son and fled, fearful that the abuse she’d endured would be inflicted upon her son.

‘I want other women who are in a controlling, violent relationship, to find the courage to speak out. I should’ve reported him when he first hit me,’ she said.

‘Please get out, it never gets better.’
