A mother-of-two became a hero for the day when she saved the life of a motorbike rider with urgent first aid before paramedics could arrive at the scene of the horrific crash.

Delivery driver and first aider Tiff Smith, 30, had been picking up orders at a Chinese restaurant on Rainham High Street in Kent on Tuesday night when a motorbike collided with a car nearby, leaving a 17-year-old seriously injured.

She rushed to the scene and was able to keep the injured teen’s airways open and perform compressions, before paramedics arrived and he was flown to a hospital in London.

Tiff described how she was about to drive away from the restaurant when she heard the crash.

She told Kent Online: ‘I just ran from my car and was the first to get to him.

‘I literally saw him go over the car. He bounced and landed in the road the other side, and his helmet came off after impact.

‘The driver got out the car straight away. She had her head in her hands.

‘He looked in a bad way. He was twisted all over the place. His leg was twisted and wrist was broken. His pelvis was twisted.’

Tiff, from Chatham, who had finally been able to put her years of first aid training as a Cadet to good use, described how the incident had made her reflect on how it would be beneficial to pass this knowledge on to children.

On Facebook she wrote: ‘A night I will never, ever forget

‘So grateful for my St Johns Ambulance training.. used to be embarrassed going to cadets when I was a teenager but now I’m going to do everything I can to make sure that more youngsters know basic first aid. I am not embarrassed, I am proud.’

Tiff rushed to the scene and was able to keep the injured teen’s airways open and perform compressions, before paramedics arrived and he was flown to hospital in London

Tiff Smith took to Facebook to post about how the incident has inspired her to set up a petition for first aid training to be added to the school curriculum

Tiff said that she doesn’t think the motorbike rider would be here today if it wasn’t for her training.

She said she is going to set up a petition to call for First Aid Training to be added to the school curriculum.

She continued: ‘I don’t understand why it isn’t already. Literally life saving knowledge and so many are unaware.

‘Imagine you’re walking down the street and someone collapses or you witness a biker smash into a car.. what are you going to do, if you don’t even know the basics. It’s a scary world and after the trauma of last night I need to try to make a change!!

‘Last night it saved a 17 year young life.. also a father to be! I am still in shock but I am so relieved to hear this morning, he is going to survive.. because of my actions in the first instance before medics arrived.’
