Mum finds message in a bottle written 135 years ago after moving floorboards

A mum who tore up her floorboards found a mysterious message in a bottle seemingly written all the back in the 1800s.

The message in a bottle, which contained a hand-scrawled note and has no relation to The Police song, was unearthed after Eilidh Stimpson asked handymen to help upend her floors.

Such a discovery showed a bottle with a message inside of it, dating back 135 years ago, meaning the Victorian artefact had been there for over a century before a plumber pulled it up.

Plumber Peter Allen cut a hole in the floor to finish his work before spotting the bottle, which was soon removed from its resting place.

Inside that dusty whisky bottle was a note dated to October 6, 1887, a message that had been secretly stashed for decades under the floors of the Edinburgh-based property.

The note found beneath the floorboards read: "James Ritchie and John Grieve laid this floor, but they did not drink the whisky. October 6, 1887. Whoever finds this bottle may think our dust is blowing along the road."

The pair were left stunned by the find, and GP Eilidh said: "We were meant to be moving a radiator from one side of the wall to the other.

"The plumber came and started cutting a hole and said it was going to be a bit of a nightmare as there was a floor on top of a floor. Then he came down the stairs going 'look at what I just found in the hole I just made!' It was quite exciting."

Plumber Peter added: "It's all a bit strange, but what a find! Where I cut the hole in the floor, is exactly where the bottle was located, which is crazy and so random."

Unfortunately to get to the note and for the sake of not ripping it, they had to smash the bottle to retrieve the piece penned by Ritchie and Grieve.

Eilidh waited for her two children, aged eight and 10, to return home to open the note.

She added: "Now, I'm thinking we need to preserve the note and replace it with a message of our own for future generations to discover."
