Naga Munchetty dressed down by co-star Charlie after 'rude' comments

Awkward moment Naga Munchetty is ‘rude’ to BBC reporter broadcasting from ice cream factory… before she’s dressed down by co-star Charlie Stayt for ‘bringing down the tone’ on show

  • Naga told the business correspondent she ‘doesn’t like’ ice cream or cold foods
  • Her co-presenter Charlie criticised her on live TV, resulting in Naga apologising

BBC Breakfast’s Naga Munchetty took a dress down from co-host Charlie Stayt and is facing backlash online after acting ‘rudely’ during a segment of reporting from an ice cream factory on this morning’s show.

The interview, carried out by reporter Hannah Miller, saw the programme go live to Snugburys ice cream factory in Nantwich at just after 9am.

After having a jovial exchange with the factory worker and tasting some of the flavours on offer, Ms Miller turned back to the studio and told Naga and Charlie: ‘It’s definitely not too early. I bet you wish you were here now!’

While the ice cream maker laughed, Naga cut in to say ‘I don’t like ice cream Hannah.’

Naga (right) and Charlie (left) seemed to have some underlying tension following the segment, before Charlie made a point of returning to usual Breakfast programming

Business Correspondent Hannah Miller did her best to keep up the fun and cheeriness of the segment, but the ice cream factory worker was clearly left rather embarrassed

The drama came about after Ms Miller tried some of the ice cream being made at the Nantwich factory, before quipping ‘I bet you wish you were here now!’

Charlie and Naga have had a few fraught moments in recent months, with viewers suggesting they are not fans of each other

She went on to say she doesn’t like ‘cold food’ and isn’t a fan of brownies either.

The segment turned rather frosty as Naga spoke, with several awkward pauses.

But the business presenter tried to inject some fun back into proceedings at the end, telling the rather embarrassed factory worker: ‘Well I’m having a great time.’

As the camera cut away, Naga added: ‘Well I’m glad you are enjoying the ice cream.’

But that wasn’t the end of the awkward encounter, as Naga’s co-host Charlie called her out for what she said on live TV.

‘Do you think you rather brought the tone down there, if you don’t mind me saying?’, commented Charlie – he seemed visibly surprised by Naga’s answers during the segment and was looking at her intently.

But Naga’s response did not sit well with viewers, as she simply laughed and said: ‘Oh be quiet, come on.’

She did then say ‘I apologise’, but laughed again.

Charlie continued staring at his co-host and said: ‘Well she was working hard doing the story and then…’

The clip went viral on social media after Chris posted on Twitter, claiming Naga had tried to ‘make it all about herself’

He then seemed to remember they were on air and quickly cut back to the autocue to resume regular Breakfast programming.

The rather tense exchange did not go unnoticed, and viewers have been quick to share their reactions, calling Naga ‘rude’, ‘mean’ and claiming she was trying to make the programme ‘all about herself.’

Others praised her co-presenter and Ms Miller for their hard work, and pledged support to the factory worker in shot.

But some viewers didn’t see a problem with Naga’s questioning and pointed out that she apologised after the segment was over.

Her supporters criticised Charlie for ‘rudely dressing her down on national TV’.

Meanwhile BBC Breakfast put a clip of the interaction on social media and captioned it with Naga’s ‘I don’t like ice cream’ comment. The post continued: ‘Which one of the #BBCBreakfast team reveals they aren’t a fan of ice cream?’

Naga hit headlines earlier this week as it was announced that the BBC is giving her a £110,000 pay rise, meaning her salary will now be £365,000 per year.

This encompasses her work on BBC Breakfast, radio and Panorama.

MailOnline has contacted the BBC for comment.
