A British man has reportedly been shot dead by his girlfriend in Costa Rica.

The 43-year-old victim has been named locally as Christopher Benjamin Martin and described as British.

Police are said to have arrested his Nicaraguan partner after she confessed to shooting him during a row ‘to frighten him.’

The incident happened on Sunday afternoon at an apartment in Alajuela, that lies north-west of Costa Rica’s capital of San Jose.

Police only went public with information on the shooting on Tuesday because Monday was a Bank Holiday in the area.

The couple are said to have got into an argument after a drinking session which turned violent and ended with the man’s partner, a 36-year-old identified only by her surname of Amador, firing a gun at him.

A local police spokesman was quoted as saying: ‘The woman says she shot him only to frighten him, wounded him in the right shoulder and he died at the scene.’

She has been taken into police custody ahead of a decision on whether she is remanded in custody or released on bail pending an ongoing criminal probe.

The results of the autopsy have not yet been made public.

The apartment the fatal shooting occurred in, part of a condominium called Ana Bolena, is said to be owned by the dead man.
